Australia’s most significant national monument is undergoing its largest transformation in decades. As part of a $550 million redevelopment, the Australian War Memorial has unveiled its new entrance – a modern, light-filled space that balances architectural innovation with solemnity, enhancing how millions engage with Australia’s military history.
The entrance marks a critical step in the War Memorial’s expansion, responding to growing visitor numbers and the need to recognise Australia’s more recent military operations. The redevelopment enhances education, accessibility, and public connection with remembrance, all while retaining the site's iconic character.
The Australian War Memorial has long stood as a symbol of national memory. But until recently, its physical space limited how much of Australia’s military story it could tell. The redevelopment, announced in 2018 and set for full completion by 2028, aims to fix that.
The new southern entrance – now the main access point – sits beneath the original 1941 structure, preserving the historic façade while offering seamless access to new galleries and exhibitions. Natural light, open walkways, and timber detailing reflect a modern but respectful aesthetic.
Critics raised concerns about cost, environmental impact, and changes to the heritage landscape. But supporters argue the result is a necessary update that allows the Memorial to properly represent the full scope of Australia’s service history.
