Sydney Airport is set for its largest upgrade since the 2000 Olympics, with a major expansion linking the T2 and T3 domestic terminals. The preliminary draft Master Plan 2045 outlines plans to create a new terminal precinct where domestic, regional, and international flights operate under one roof, supported by driverless buses connecting to the existing T1 International Terminal.
The terminal expansion is designed to meet Sydney’s growing aviation demand, even after the opening of Western Sydney International. By consolidating services in one precinct, the airport aims to increase efficiency, reduce runway congestion, and enhance passenger connectivity. International passengers are expected to grow from under 40% to just over 50% of total travellers, reflecting Sydney Airport’s strategic focus on premium international and domestic travel.
While the project promises faster connections, improved capacity, and economic growth, it will also bring increased air traffic and noise for surrounding communities. The airport emphasises that these impacts will be managed with quieter aircraft, environmental strategies, and careful planning. Public consultation is open until 12 December 2025, allowing residents, airlines, and stakeholders to provide feedback before final approval.
The T2–T3 expansion marks a defining moment in Sydney Airport’s evolution, promising to transform the gateway to Australia’s largest city while balancing growth with responsibility.
